Pudgy Penguins (@pudgypenguins) has launched its new Pengu Plushies line in Target (@Target) stores across the U.S., the brand announced on July 19. The launch puts the main character Pengu in more than 1,800 Target toy aisles, next to familiar names like Bluey and Hello Kitty, and in front of millions of weekly shoppers who have never opened a cryptocurrency wallet.
For a project that started with 8,888 selfies on Ethereum, that shelf space is the bottom line. Most dollar NFT collections have faded from the 2021 boom and become irrelevant. Pudgy Penguins has spent the past four years turning a cartoon penguin into a consumer brand instead, and Target’s launch is the clearest evidence yet that the strategy is working.
What do Pudgy Penguins advertise?
In a post on The official account teased photos of the landing and an offer to send free dolls to fans who said something nice about Pengu.
The launch isn’t Target’s first foray into the brand, but it is its biggest. The timeline shows a steady rise:
Pudgy Toys launched on Amazon in May 2023 and quickly became the number one seller in three separate categories. Walmart’s rollout began in September 2023 across nearly 2,000 stores, and later expanded to more than 3,100 plush toys that hit Target’s collectibles aisles in May 2024, by which point the toy line had sold more than 1 million units and generated $10 million in first-year sales. The Vibes Series 3 trading card set hits Target stores in June 2026, bringing total cards in circulation to approximately 15 million
The new Pengu Plushies push the brand from the collectibles aisle into the series’ main toy aisle.
How have Pudgy Penguins surpassed their $NFT counterparts?
The collection was launched in July 2021 and sold out quickly, but the project almost died along with the rest of the market. Community dissatisfaction…
