U.S. stocks fell Friday, closing the week with modest losses for the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq, as traders weighed President Donald Trump’s latest comments regarding the Federal Reserve and geopolitics.

For the week, the 30-stock Dow Jones fell 0.3%, the benchmark S&P 500 fell 0.4%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost 0.7%. The small-cap Russell 2000 index jumped 2%, hitting a new closing record Friday.

More volatility could be expected in the coming week as investors assess the outlook for the economy, inflation, interest rates and corporate earnings amid ongoing trade and geopolitical tensions.

President Trump said Saturday that eight NATO members would face tariffs of up to 25 percent unless a deal is reached for the United States to purchase Greenland.

U.S. markets will be closed Monday to celebrate the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. On the economic calendar, most important will be Thursday’s core PCE price index, which is the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge.

Meanwhile, the fourth-quarter earnings season shifts into high gear, with reports expected from several high-profile companies, including Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), (NASDAQ:UAL), Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG), Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), (NYSE:GE), and 3M Company (NYSE:MMM).

Investors are also waiting for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on the legality of President Trump’s global tariffs, after failing to do so last week. The court will also hear arguments on Trump’s attempt to remove Fed Governor Lisa Cook.
