1 Stock to Buy, 1 Stock to Sell This Week: Apple, Starbucks


The Fed’s FOMC meeting, Powell’s press conference, big tech earnings and the US government shutdown deadline will be in focus this week. Apple reports earnings Thursday after the closing bell, and expectations are growing for a battered and increased quarter. Starbucks is a sell with declining earnings growth and a weak outlook expected.

The stock market finished mixed on Friday, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite posting consecutive weeks of losses.

The 30-stock Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5% for the week. The S&P 500 fell about 0.4%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell less than 0.1%, while the small-cap Russell 2000 lost 0.3%.

The blockbuster week ahead is expected to be a busy one, filled with several potentially market-moving events, including a key Federal Reserve policy meeting, as well as a flurry of important technology results.

The U.S. central bank is almost certain to keep interest rates unchanged on Wednesday, but Fed Chairman Jerome Powell could shake up the stock market when he speaks at the post-meeting news conference.

Other notable economic reports expected in the coming week include durable goods orders data on Monday and the Conference Board’s consumer confidence index for January, which will be released on Tuesday. Friday will also see the release of the Producer Price Index report for December.

Meanwhile, earnings season is in full swing, with four of the “Magnificent Seven” big tech stocks expected to report their latest results this week. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) will report Wednesday evening, while (NASDAQ:AAPL) is due Thursday evening.
